School Safety

The parents of your students send their children to school every day with the hope that they are receiving a good education, the desire that their children are respected, and the expectation that they are safe. Above anything else, the goal of every school district should be to make sure that the time these young people are in the care of the school, they are free from the dangers that sometimes plague the rest of society. But how can school systems that are struggling with limited funds increase their school safety measures?

1.Refrain from locker use. The first and easiest way to begin improving your campus security is to ban student locker use. It is obvious that dangerous substances and items can be easily stored within lockers, which is why most schools are moving towards a no-locker policy. While it is frustrating to have to punish the good kids along with the bad ones, it simply cannot be helped. Let parents and students know that any belongings must be stored within backpacks, and that backpacks could be checked at any time. Some students will complain that their bags get too heavy, or that they dont like carrying everything around; but eventually everyone will get used to it.

2.Institute Identification Tags. Campus faculty and security teams simply must know who is supposed to be on their campus, and who is not. An photo ID tag has become almost an absolute necessity, especially with larger campuses. ID equipment may get a bit expensive, but with some creativity, your campus should be able to get some assistance either from the manufacturer, local community organizations, or even a PTA fund drive.

3.Partner with Your Local Police Force. Most large campuses have a police officer that is assigned directly to them on a full-time basis. If your campus does not have one, make an appeal to your local police department to create this position, or to rotate officers in and out of the position. You simply must have a peace officer on your campus who can react quickly in an school safety emergency.
