Online Nursing DegreesAs the population of the United States ages, the healthcare industry is expanding at a very rapid rate. The demand for trained health care professionals is larger than ever and it is only expected to continue to increase in upcoming years. With this increased demand has come a rise in wages. The availability of jobs and increased earning potential has motivated many registered nurses to pursue online nursing degrees to become nurse practitioners. Registered nurses who want to become nurse practitioners, often find it is easier to do so via online nursing degrees. Registered nurses work a variety of hours and days. Online nursing degrees often offer potential students more flexibility in the format and times of available courses. This flexibility often allows registered nurses to continue working while they complete the advanced requirements of a nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners differ from registered nurses in that they possess skills and training which allow them to provide common basic health care services. Such services may include: routine physical exams, interpretation of test and laboratory results and provision of treatment. If a nurse practitioner is certified he/she may prescribe and administer medication to patients. Nurse practitioners are required to complete a bachelors degree of nursing (or similar degree), complete a masters degree from a nurse practitioner program and hold a nursing license. Similar to medical doctors, all nurse practitioners specialize in an area of care such as: pediatrics, geriatrics, family care, gynecology, psychiatry and so on. Some nurse practitioners work in a clinic or hospital, while others may have their own office. Midwifery which has seen recent increase in independent nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners are in demand in all areas of the United States and in all settings. Shortages are especially predominant in rural and urban areas, as well as, the southern parts of the country. |
