Elementary Lesson PlansUsually in Elementary schools children have the same teacher for the entire day teaching all of the subjects. This can be quite a daunting task for any teacher who has to have knowledge in many areas and hold the students’ interest all day. Good elementary lesson plans are essential for success as a teacher and elementary lesson plans are available in books or online. Veteran teachers can be a wealth of information when putting together elementary lesson plans since they have experience concerning what works and what doesn’t. Putting together elementary lesson plans can take an entire summer, but once these plans have been created, elementary lesson plans can be used for years. Few teachers adhere exactly to their elementary lesson plans since class discussion can take learning in a new direction and a teacher may discover that one particular lesson or method is not working. Elementary lesson plans should be fluid and can be adjusted according to a teacher’s or a students’ needs. Elementary lesson plans should allot the same amount of time for every subject. Many teachers devote about 45 minutes to subject areas such as history or math, since few young children have the patience to sit for an hour and listen to a lecture. Elementary lesson plans should include lessons that are as interactive as possible and engage the students’ interests. For later grades that require homework and tests, these should be regularly scheduled so a student knows what to expect and because children by nature crave structure and consistency. As incentives for good performance on tests or behavior, schedule special activities including field trips. Contests and games are also a great way of applying what has been learned in a fun and active way. Elementary lesson plans should include the right balance of various types of activities. When possible, learning should be active and involve the child’s creativity. However, children should also be taught to appreciate reading and solitary learning as well. |
