Learning Theory

There are many learning theories in existence today, and they are developed by both teachers and learners. They include constructivism, behaviorism, multiple intelligences and others. It is up to you to decide which learning theory suits your students the best.

Behaviorism is a learning theory that is easy to understand as it relies on observable behavior to describe several universal laws of human nature. It has positive and negative reinforcement techniques that prove to be effective in treating human disorders like autism and antisocial behavior. This is a learning theory that is widely used by teachers to reward or punish students.

When you adopt the learning theory of constructivism, you have to eliminate the standardized curriculum. It helps in promoting a persons past knowledge with the use of a customized curriculum. It also places emphasis on hands-on problem solving to facilitate learning. Another important aspect of this learning theory is that it encourages educators to make connections between facts in order to foster new understanding among students. With the promotion of extensive dialogue, students tend to discuss and understand things better.

With the multiple intelligences learning, educators prefer to follow verbal-linguistic and logical mathematical intelligences. There is a balanced curriculum of the arts, communication, self-awareness and physical education. This learning theory also uses methods that suit all levels of intelligence like role playing, cooperative learning, musical performance, story telling, reflection and visualization. With this learning theory, the teaching methods are based on the diversity of intelligences and self-assessment tools. With these tools, students find it easier to understand their own intellectual development.

By adopting the right learning theory, you can help your students realize their potential and achieve a more profound understanding of things. Other than helping them score better grades, you will also contribute to their development as intellectual beings.
