Elementary School CurriculumIt used to be that a child would go to school and there would be a one size fits all elementary school curriculum in place. It usually involved some combination of reading, writing and arithmetic, the very basics of a good education. Nowadays that couldnt be further from the standard. There are a variety of choices when it comes to teaching basic elementary school curriculum. While reading, writing and arithmetic are certainly core foundations of most elementary level school curricula, many larger and some smaller public school districts are offering parents, teachers and students a variety of learning options through the creation of Magnet Schools. Magnet Schools are schools that emphasize a certain curriculum or learning focus. At the elementary level, some of the different magnet school curriculum options might include: fine arts, foreign language, technology, or community service learning. Alternatively, instead of having a particular curriculum focus, Magnet Schools might have a distinct learning environment. For example, one school might subscribe to Child-Centered Learning, where the students drive the curriculum based on their interests and passions. Another might focus on outdoor education, using the natural world as their classroom. Each of these possibilities allow children and teachers to create an elementary school curriculum that is less content driven and more focused on individual student needs, interests and strengths. The world is ever-changing. It is not so much a question of what to learn, but how to learn. Students need to be good problem solvers and critical thinkers. They can still learn the basics while pursuing interests that make it all come alive for them. Their passion for learning comes through in all aspects of the curriculum because their interests are integrated throughout. The option of magnet schools has opened up a whole new world of learning for students, parents and teachers. |
